Starting your child’s dance journey is an exciting milestone, and we’re thrilled to welcome you to the Clarion Center for the Arts family! Whether your child is a tiny tot stepping into their first class or an older beginner eager to explore dance, their first experience can set the stage for a lifetime of confidence, creativity, and joy. To help you and your little one feel prepared, here’s a guide on what to expect at your first dance class at Clarion Center for the Arts.

1. Arrival and Warm Welcome

When you arrive at the Clarion Center for the Arts, you’ll be greeted with smiles from our friendly instructors and staff. We pride ourselves on creating a warm, inclusive environment where every child feels comfortable and supported.

Plan to arrive about 10-15 minutes early to allow time to find parking, check in, and get your child ready for class. Our studio address is 15506 Route 322, Clarion, PA, making it a convenient location for local families.

Our instructors often take a moment to chat with new students before class begins, easing any first-day jitters and helping them transition smoothly into the group.

2. What to Wear

The right attire helps your child feel confident and ready to move! For their first dance class, here are some general guidelines based on the type of dance they’re exploring:

Toddler & Preschool Classes: For little ones ages 1.5-5, anything they can move comfortably in will do! Many parents opt for leggings and a t-shirt. If they have a tutu or leotard they're welcome to wear that.

Petite & Primary Classes: If your child is just trying it out, they can start with a fitted t-shirt, leggings, and socks. A pair of ballet and tap shoes are included with your 2-Week Intro!

Principal Classes: If your pre-teen/teenager is just trying it out, they can start with a fitted t-shirt, leggings, and socks. If they are experienced, then please have them wear a leotard and tights. A pair of ballet shoes is included with your 2-Week Intro. Shoes for other genres of dance can be purchases at the local Dancer's Shop on Main Street or any reputable dance wear store!

Remember, we will give you a leotard and a pair of tights when you enroll! So if you don't have a leotard and tights for your 2-Week Intro THAT'S OK!

Make sure hair is pulled back neatly, and avoid accessories like watches or dangling jewelry that might get in the way. If you have specific questions about attire, don’t hesitate to check with us before class.

3. What to Bring

Most kids don’t need much for their first class, but a small dance bag can help keep everything organized. Here’s a quick checklist to bring along:

Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important, and active little dancers will appreciate a sip during breaks.

Dance Shoes: If you've signed up for a 2-Week Intro then you'll receive your included dance shoes at your first class! If you don't have the correct shoes for your first classes, no worries—they can kickstart their dance training in just a pair of socks!

Energy and Excitement: The most important thing your child can bring is their enthusiasm!

You can leave heavy bags or items at home, as our studio is equipped to meet your child’s needs during their session.

4. What Happens During the First Class

Once class begins, your child will be guided through warm-up exercises and fun activities that introduce basic dance moves. Our skilled instructors focus on creating a supportive atmosphere where kids feel free to explore and express themselves.

Don’t worry if your child is shy or hesitant at first—this is completely normal! Our team is experienced in helping children build confidence as they ease into the class. Classes are designed to be engaging and age-appropriate, so your child will enjoy learning alongside their peers.

You’ll notice a focus on character-building woven into every moment. Dance is about more than just movement—it’s about developing discipline, teamwork, and creativity.

5. Meeting Other Students

Dance classes are wonderful places for kids to make friends and develop social skills. From the moment they step foot in the studio, your child will be interacting with classmates in a positive, encouraging environment. Parents often tell us how much their kids love the connections they make at Clarion Center for the Arts.

If your child is a bit nervous about meeting new people, encourage them to introduce themselves or pair up with another student during group activities. It won’t take long for smiles and chatter to begin!

6. Parent Perks

Parents can take advantage of their child’s class time to unwind or interact with other parents in our community. Some families use this time to observe their child from a distance, while others run quick errands or enjoy a moment of quiet.

If you prefer to stay close by, feel free to ask our team about the best areas for parents to wait during class. Our goal is for both you and your child to have an enjoyable experience.

7. Post-Class Chats and Reflections

After class, take a moment to ask your child about their experience. What were their favorite moves or activities? Did they make a new friend? Their answers can help you understand what excites them most about dance and prepare for future sessions.

Our instructors are always available after class to answer questions or share feedback about your child’s progress. We’re here to ensure your family gets the most out of every moment at Clarion Center for the Arts.
