Dance Costumes
Your dancer’s recital costume is an important part of their big performance, and taking good care of it will help ensure they look and feel their best on stage! Here are some essential tips to keep costumes performance-ready:
Try It On—Then Keep It Safe!
Have your dancer try on their costume at home once to ensure a proper fit. It should fit like a swimsuit! Be sure to pull the leotard portion up all the way from the bottom.
If any alterations are needed, please take care of them as soon as possible.
After confirming the fit, store the costume safely and do not wear it again until Picture Day, Dress Rehearsal, and Performances to keep it in perfect condition.
Alterations & Fit
Simple adjustments like hemming, taking in seams, or adding straps may be needed.
If you’re unsure how to alter the costume, a local tailor or seamstress can help.
Be sure to complete any alterations well before recital day to allow time for adjustments.
Storing the Costume
Keep the costume in the garment bag provided or a protective cover to prevent dust and damage.
Hang tutus and dresses to maintain their shape—avoid cramming them into tight spaces.
Store accessories, tights, and shoes in a labeled bag so nothing gets lost.
Handling Wrinkles
Most costumes should NOT be ironed. Instead, hang them in a steamy bathroom or use a handheld steamer on a low setting.
Avoid using a traditional dryer, as heat can damage delicate fabrics.
Keeping It Clean
Costumes should not be washed unless absolutely necessary. Spot clean stains gently with cold water and a mild detergent.
Do not eat or drink (except water) while wearing the costume to avoid spills.
If deodorant stains occur, use a gentle stain remover safe for delicate fabrics.
Final Checks Before Recital Day
Double-check that all pieces (costume, tights, shoes, accessories) are packed and ready.
Try the costume on before the big day to ensure it still fits comfortably.
Label all costume pieces with your dancer’s name to avoid mix-ups backstage.
By taking great care of their costume, your dancer will be recital-ready and confident when they step on stage! If you have any questions about costume care or alterations, feel free to reach out.
